These are the municipalities affected by the legislation

In which municipalities will low emission zones (ZBEs) be implemented starting from January 1, 2023? Here are the municipalities affected in Spain.

The Law 7/2021, of 20 May, on climate change and the energy transitionin force since the day of its publication in the Official State Gazette, it has established a series of guidelines that determine it from 1 January 2023, populations with more than 50,000 inhabitants will have low-emission zones, i.e. sections in which conventional internal combustion cars will not be able to circulate. This means that municipal councils and other delegations must now make efforts to be able to implement the new rules.

Now, to date, which municipalities are affected by this provision? In Spain, there will be a total of 149 population centers who will have to develop a specialized urban plan in this area. It is a mission for which a sort of moratorium has been granted to give the Authorities more time. The schedule, however, will take effect on January 1 next year.

So let’s see which municipalities are concerned this new regulation according to the Autonomous Community where I am. It is a measure that will reduce pollution in certain spaces, while increasing the commitment to use more sustainable alternatives, such as a greater incentive for public transport. Here are the geographical points where this proposal will take place.

The municipalities affected by the low-emission zones amount to a total of 149 places, which still have a few months to be able carry out the necessary renovations. This is a standard known since May 2021, so that the Municipal Councils could have the time necessary to make the necessary adjustments to the road network. Even so, it is a controversial measure that will cause higher traffic density in related areas. This, therefore, would lead to higher emissions in the areas contiguous to these specific zones.

Low-emission zones have become one of the public tools to suffocate a little more the marketing of cars with conventional mechanics.
