Japanese brands produce the most reliable cars. This was revealed by a survey by the Consumers’ Association. Not only were the members of this association consulted, but other consumers were also able to share their experiences with their car via social media.
While this type of research abroad often shows Toyota or Lexus as the best, this Dutch study proves it Suzuki the winner. With a rating of 8.5, this brand takes first place, knocking compatriot Mitsubishi off the throne. Last year, Mitsubishi was still labeled the most trusted car brand.
Yet there are also many reasons for Mitsubishi to celebrate. The various Suzukis are jointly number 1, but one type of Mitsubishi gets the highest score. The Mitsubishi ASX, sold in our country between 2007 and 2022, can call itself the most reliable car in our country with a score of 9.3. According to the survey results, only 1% of Mitsubishi ASXs in the Netherlands refused service.
Also, state the Mitsubishi brand again this year at the top of the reliability ranking. He is behind Suzuki in second place with a nearly comparable score of 8.4. Toyota is in fourth place and has to put up with Subaru in third place. Fifth position is shared by Honda, Mazda and BMW. With that BMW the highest ranked non-Japanese brand on the list.
The results do not show how many kilometers the models traveled.
Car up to ten years
The survey is conducted annually by the Consumer Association and is the only one in the Netherlands that makes the quality of cars visible on a large scale. In particular, it clarifies which cars Dutch motorists are more or less satisfied with.
The Consumers’ Association asked how many times owners have had bad luck with their car in the past year. A repair that could wait counted for 20 percent and one where the car had to go straight to the shop for 35 percent. Breakdowns in which the car could no longer drive had a weighting factor of 45 percent.
Due to the chosen research method, the research is unfortunately not representative of all motorists in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the survey is limited to passenger cars built from 2012 onwards.
Renault tops the losers list
Of course, the list of cars perceived by consumers as the least reliable is also interesting. The Renault (Large) Scenic delivered between 2012 and 2015 received the worst score in this study: a 1.
The Mégane (2012-2016) also scores particularly poorly with a score of 2.2. The same is true for cars such as the Skoda Fabia (2007-2014, score 3.7), the Peugeot 208 (until 2019, score 4.6) and the Renault ZOE (score 4.3). The Citroën (Grand) C4 Picasso (until 2018) also scores particularly poorly with a 3.8. And the Volkswagen Polo of the previous generation before restyling did not fare well with a 4.5.
According to the editors of AutoWeek, some observations must be made on the research: “The results do not show how many kilometers the cars have been driven. We therefore find a relatively large number of models with high ratings which – perhaps – are appreciated by relatively older age groups and so they usually do less mileage, so a solid grain of salt is needed.”
Operation You can read more on the AutoWeek site on the results of this survey and there you will also find the rankings of winners and losers.
