Populix released a survey report titled “Mobile Phone Usage and 5G Network Projection” which discusses the use of mobile phones and the future of 5G networks among the people of Indonesia.
This survey was conducted on 1,000 male and female respondents aged 18-55 years during 4-14 July 2022. It was revealed that the majority of people in the country are ready to use 5G networks.
“5G technology offers various advantages ranging from network speed, lower latency to the ability to connect with more devices. These advantages certainly make the Indonesian people very enthusiastic about its presence, 92% of the people already have plans to upgrade to the network. 5G. Indonesian People’s Favorite Mobile Phone Brand
In the Populix survey, it was revealed that 79% of Indonesians own a cell phone to support their daily activities. Even 21% of the people today have 2 to 3 mobile phones to support their mobility.
In terms of the operating system, Android dominates the types of Indonesian phones compared to iOS. The mobile phone brands that dominate the Indonesian market are:
- Samsung (25%)
- Xiaomi (23%)
- Oppo (14%)
- iPhone (14%)
“Interestingly, Samsung has succeeded in shifting Xiaomi’s position this year, after the previous Populix survey report in February 2021 revealed that Xiaomi ranks first as the most used cellphone, followed by Samsung, Oppo, and iPhone,” said Populix.

Populix also revealed the use of mobile operators. Nearly 9 out of 10 people surveyed choose a prepaid card with a maximum spend of up to IDR 200,000 per month.
Meanwhile, 82% of the credit usage was dominated by internet quota usage, making phone calls (12%), and SMS (6%). Indonesians are also increasingly relying on internet connections to communicate on a daily basis.
As many as 67% of Indonesians are connected to WiFi to access the internet, while the remaining 33% are connected to mobile internet quota. Most of them access the internet for 4-8 hours per day with the most accessed time is 6 pm – 9 pm.
The survey results show that the majority of Indonesians still choose Telkomsel (46%) as the most widely used cellular operator, followed by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (33%), XL Axiata (17%), and Smartfren (4%).
Previously, the Populix survey in September 2020 also showed that Telkomsel was in the first position for the most used provider, followed by 3 (Tri), Indosat Ooredoo, and XL. This shows that Telkomsel has managed to maintain its position as the top cellular operator to date.
In addition, as the first telco company to deploy a 5G network, Telkomsel (81%) is the most well-known 5G provider among Indonesians. Followed by XL Axiata (31%), Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (30%), and Smartfren (10%).

In the midst of the rapid development of 5G networks in Indonesia, 79% of people surveyed said that they already know about 5G networks. However, another 12% of respondents said they were unsure and 9% said they did not know about this fifth generation network.
Among people who already know about 5G, a fast internet connection is the most recognized advantage of 5G. These internet connection speeds (94%), coupled with greater internet capacity (43%), are the two main reasons that drive 92% of people considering switching to 5G networks in the future.
Even to use the 5G network, people plan to buy phones that support 5G networks such as Samsung (59%), iPhone (41%), and Oppo (22%).
Interestingly, in the midst of public enthusiasm about the 5G network. As many as 8% of the public said they did not want to use the 5G network due to limited internet access (53%), higher costs (39%), not yet familiar with the technology (36%), and worried about radiation that is harmful to health (17%). ).
For this reason, the importance of synergies from the government, service providers, and community institutions to disseminate information about the 5G network so that people are better educated.
