Lanz has been appearing regularly on ZDF with his nightly talk show since 2009 and has long stood for a certain questioning art. On the show – there have now been more than 2,000 editions – he usually has three to four guests in the studio who he interviews and discusses with. Occasionally there is an overarching theme, but in most cases Lanz’s guests are interviewed on individual topics.

Lanz has conducted over 10,000 interviews so far, including with Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Adele, Karl Lagerfeld, Stephen King, with current and former top German and European politicians as well as with important current affairs personalities.

“What we do in the studio is just craftsmanship. Someone says something and I try to confirm it or argue against it,” he once said about himself in an interview. And about his long-standing talk format: “It’s about conveying something substantial to people. Our show is increasingly a bit of a community college. I want to get to know things and understand them better.”

Lanz, who has received several awards for his TV activities, was with RTL presenter Birgit Schrowange until 2006. The ex-couple has an adult son. Lanz married Angela Gessmann in 2011. Two daughters were born in this marriage in 2014 and 2018. In February 2023, Lanz’s lawyer confirmed that the couple had separated.
