These are the 5 municipalities where the mayoral elections will be repeated

The residents of five municipalities will go out this Sunday, August 20, to elect their next mayor and municipal corporation, after the elections did not take place on June 25 due to violent actions that, in some cases, the electoral process did not take place. .

Separately, they will also elect for president among Sandra Torresof the National Unity of Hope (UNE) and Bernardo Arevalofrom the Seed Movement party.

The municipalities that will repeat the elections are:

  1. San Jose del Golfo, in Guatemala
  2. San Martin Zapotitlan, Retalhuleu
  3. San Pedro Yepocapa, Chimaltenango
  4. San Pablo Jocopilas, Suchitepéquez; and
  5. San Bartolome Jocotenango, in Quiche.

San Jose del Golfo, Guatemala

In San José del Golfo, Guatemala, the elections were suspended due to conflicts and protests that were generated by reports of hauling of people who supposedly would vote for the current mayor, the neighbors did not allow buses to enter.

The anti-riot forces confronted residents. Therefore, given the lack of security conditions, the Departmental Electoral Board of Guatemala decided to suspend voting.

San Martin Zapotitlan, Retalhuleu

While, in San Martín Zapotitlán, Retalhuleu, the electoral process was carried out normally until there were complaints from the “voter hauling”. There were protests that ended with the burning of ballot papers and electoral furniture.

San Pedro Yepocapa, Chimaltenango

In San Pedro Yepocapa, Chimaltenango, the riots occurred a day after the results were known, the residents came to demonstrate in front of the municipal building in rejection of the results and ended up burning it, for which the elections were annulled.

San Pablo Jocopilas, Suchitepequez

Separately, in San Pablo Jocopilas, Suchitepéquez, due to disagreement with the results, the residents attacked the mayor’s house and intimidated the members of the Municipal Electoral Board. The Suchitepéquez Departmental Electoral Board requested the annulment of the elections, after 32 of the 35 certificates issued by the polling stations were stolen.

San Bartolome Jocotenango, Quiche

And finally, in San Bartolomé Jocotenango, Quiché, on June 25 there was burning of ballots, as well as intimidation of the members of the Vote Receiving Boards. Only 14 of the 25 municipal records were processed.
