The anniversary initiative of the Stifterverband “Effect high 100” is entering the first funding phase: an expert advisory board has selected the 100 best ideas for the future of the education, science and innovation system. Almost three million euros were collected for the initiative. The projects are not just about money, but also about practical support. This is new in science and innovation funding.

On the occasion of its 100th birthday, the Stifterverband launched the initiative Effect high 100 in summer 2020. Germany’s best 100 ideas for the education, science and innovation system of tomorrow were sought. From the more than 500 applications received, the initiative’s independent expert advisory board has now selected 100 projects for the first phase of the multi-stage funding program.
“It was important to me that a project not only wanted to realize a brilliant idea, but also took on a concrete social challenge,” says Kristina Reiss, member of the advisory board and dean of the School of Education at the Technical University of Munich. “We need new ideas and solutions for the rapid social and technological changes we are currently experiencing. Just keeping pace is not enough – we have to actively shape change. ”
Reiss is one of over 30 advisory board members who selected the 100 projects. The diverse body includes students, lecturers, scientists, entrepreneurs and representatives of civil society organizations. Thanks to generous donations from companies and private donors, the funding initiative has almost three million euros at its disposal. The originally intended goal of two million euros was exceeded by far. However, it is not just about financial support.
“With traditional funding programs, there are often few points of contact between sponsors and sponsors,” says Volker Meyer-Guckel, Deputy Secretary General of the Stifterverband. “We do it differently with effect to the power of 100. The supporters are very close to their ‘protégés’. They support their development process with their network, their know-how and their resources. This is a real novelty in research and innovation funding. “
The Stifterverband cooperates with ProjectTogether in order to implement this special form of funding. The non-profit organization networks the selected projects with each other and with the supporters. The central component here is a digital platform that bundles resources and makes them available as required. In addition, the projects meet directly in digital workrooms and come together with coaches and experts. There they learn how to make their ideas a success and, for example, how to use crowdfunding to gain additional financial resources.
