Emma Coronel Aispuro was released on September 13, 2023, after serving a sentence in the United States for charges linking her to the Sinaloa Cartel, an organization led by her husband, Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán. Among the conditions for maintaining her freedom under surveillance, the US authorities required that Coronel have a full-time job, with a minimum of 30 hours per week.

The 35-year-old woman’s life has attracted a lot of attention since before she was arrested, as she showed off a life of luxury on social media, wearing clothes from well-known brands such as Gucci or Louis Vuitton and travelling, which is why many people are wondering what she does for a living.

The truth is that participating as a model in a video is Emma Coronel’s first job, since she married Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán on July 2, 2007, when she had just turned 18, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t had other, less formal occupations.

As a teenager, she won beauty pageants such as the Coffee and Guava Fair in Canelas, Durango, where she met El Chapo Guzmán at the age of 17. At that time, she was not very clear about who the man who had fallen in love with her was. She only felt loved for his treatment, and she has revealed in several interviews that she did not receive very ostentatious gifts from him.

It should be noted that Emma Coronel’s life has been deeply tied to organized crime, being the niece of Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Coronel, a former partner of ‘El Chapo’. Coronel grew up in Angostura, Sinaloa, a place she described as far away from the stress of urban life and without very striking aspects like a big city.

After their marriage, they moved to Culiacan, Sinaloa, from where Guzman ran his criminal operations, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Coronel studied journalism at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa and had twin daughters with Guzman; however, their encounters were sporadic due to the dangerous nature of their activities.

Emma Coronel’s occupations could be summed up as working as a model, participating in beauty pageants, and studying journalism after getting married at 18, but she never pursued her career in journalism.

In a recent interview with María Antonieta Collins on Univisión’s Despierta América, Coronel shared her experiences about how her reintegration into society has been and her first job after her release. She confirmed that she began working as a model on a project by her friend Mariel Colón Miró. Colón Miró, a lawyer and singer of regional Mexican music, decided to include Coronel as the protagonist in the music video for a song titled La Señora, which refers to Emma’s life.

During the interview, Coronel explained that participating in the video clip was an easy task thanks to the closeness with the people involved in the project. “The people I worked with made it easy, because I know them, some of them are my friends,” recalled the model, who mentioned that she always had the dream of being a model since her childhood.

According to Coronel and Colón’s social media announcements, the music video for “La Señora” is scheduled to premiere on August 9, 2024. The song was composed by Mario ‘El Cachorro’ Delgado, who is also the author of “Un corrido pa’ Joaquín,” dedicated to Guzmán Loera. Some of the lyrics of the song “La Señora” contain explicit references to his relationship with Guzmán and his daughters, María Joaquina and Emaly, as mentioned in one of the fragments: “Those girls of my eyes, little treasures of their father. I entrust them to you, beautiful, I know that you will know how to take care of them.”
