During the Cold War era, the Soviet Union became the first country to successfully send the Luna 2 unmanned probe to the lunar surface in 1959 using a Sputnik rocket. But only a few years later, the Soviet Union managed to photograph the lunar surface after sending the Luna 9 and Luna 13 probes.
Then on the Luna 16 mission on September 24, 1970, the Soviet Union managed to take a sample of the moon’s surface rock and bring it to Earth. This success was followed by the next mission, namely, Luna 20 (1972) and Luna 24 (1976).
