Sometimes the high price is not necessarily synonymous with higher quality. The beers prove it: some of those at bargain prices are among the best in the supermarket. The same can happen with wines.

But how do you distinguish a good cheap bottle from a bad one? On the one hand there are some simple tricks to recognize a bad wine even without understanding anything. On the other hand, one can rely on expert opinion.

Every year the prestigious US magazine Wine Enthusiast publishes a list of the best 100 wines in the world under 15 dollars, or about 13 euros. In the 2021 ranking there are some interesting proposals: in particular these 3 Italian wines cost less than 10 euros but are among the best in the world.

We start with Castello di Gabbiano 2017 Cavaliere d’Oro, a Chianti with an aroma of violet, berries and Mediterranean scrub, at the indicated price of 9.40 euros. Presents on the palate tannins soft and notes of dried black cherry, star anise and pepper.

This is followed by Monte Antico 2016, a classic medium-bodied Tuscan red, with an aroma of red fruit, spices and undergrowth. On the palate it reveals smooth tannins and notes of ripe plum, sage and mandarin peel. The indicated price is 8.50 euros.

Finally, the Stemmari 2019 Estate Grown Sustainably Farmed Nero d’Avola. The price indicated for this Sicilian red is 9.30 euros. Soft on the palate, it has aromas of berries, carob and spices.
