There’s a Škoda for sale that you’ve probably never heard of: Elmo is influencing the dynamics of the future – Garáž.cz

The origin of Škoda Elmo is related to the business plan of a Swiss entrepreneur named Bruno Fidez. At the beginning of the 1980s and 1990s, this man came to the Mladá Boleslav car company with the idea of taking a thousand of the new options without the engine and other parts of the drive train and converting them to electric vehicles in Switzerland.

But the Czechoslovak representative had enough worries and rejected Fidez. However, the idea of an electric Favorit did not work. In May 1991, it was taken over by the Škoda Engineering plant in Ejpovice (later Škoda Elcar), which was part of of the Pilsen Škoda concern.

In the workshops of this company, the internal combustion engine, the exhaust or fuel system and other unnecessary parts were removed from the favorites and an electric motor of Czechoslovak production was moved under the front hood. Its power reached 15.4 kW, there are also versions with 13 and 18 kW.

Interestingly, the electric motor was mated to the original manual transmission. However, it only offered four gears, the fifth gear was blocked.

In addition to the electric favorites, there was also a job construction.

The electric motor drew energy from lead batteries, and the total capacity reached up to 15.4 kWh. So the range was only about 60 to 80 kilometers. The car was not even very fast, it started at a maximum of 80 km/h. Charging from a classic 220V socket took up to 12 hours.

In Ejpovice, they changed not only the classic five-door hatchback, but also the utility vehicle to electric cars. In them, the installation of an electric drive and 420-kilogram batteries had a negative effect on the useful weight, which fell to 350 kg.

In the end, the electric Škoda Favorit did not succeed. Perhaps also because it appeared with great delay, the originally planned collection of one thousand samples for Switzerland did not even happen. Ultimately, depending on available sources, only 150 to 200 examples were produced until the end of production in 1994.

Some stayed in the country, some ended up abroad, with the exception of Switzerland, for example in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, or even in Canada. And that brings us to Skoda Elmo…

While in most markets the car was called Eltra, in Britain the electric car was sold as Elmo. Of course, this version has right-hand drive.

Unfortunately, we don’t know how many cars were built for British buyers, or how many of them were builders, but it certainly wasn’t many – we’d count units of pieces. That’s why we were interested in finding just one Elmo on the famous advertising portal Mobile.de. It is for sale in Poland.

According to the seller, it is a 1992 model with about 10,000 kilometers on it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t say what the technical situation is. Although Elmo appears to be well preserved in the photos, we would be very interested in the condition of the electric drive and batteries. On the other hand, replacing a few lead acid batteries is not such an expensive splurge.

We can only offer a price of 21,000 euros, ie about 530,000 crowns.
