A BT reader wonders why the Armed Forces allows the reconnaissance aircraft AWACS to circle over the outdoor areas in the Raunefjord on one of the few sunny days in July.

– It flies low and has unbearable sound. Why is this necessary, she asks.

– Does not take into account weather

Elisabeth Eikeland, who is the spokesperson at the Armed Forces’ operational headquarters, has the answer.

– This flight has been planned for many weeks in advance, and does not take into account that the weather is good in Bergen, says Eikeland.

– But if you knew how the weather has been in Western Norway in July, it is almost well done to meet a sunny day?

– The consolation is that it is on its way back to Germany. It is a NATO aircraft, and the pilots have to know the peculiarities of the various airports, such as crosswinds and turbulence, the commander sergeant elaborates and continues:

– So we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused, and hope for an understanding of the NATO alliance’s needs.

– Does this plane make a lot of noise?

– The sound carries sharper and you get the sound much louder when it is clear weather. Clouds act as mufflers. It’s about atmospheric disturbances. This is a big machine, says Eikeland.

surveillance

AWACS, which stands for Airborne Warning and Control System, is according to Wikipedia a radar system mounted in aircraft.

The term is often used on all aircraft of this type. It provides a detailed picture of the situation at all times and can be used for searching for, identifying and electronically pursuing enemy aircraft.

The AWACS aircraft that circled over Bergen is a surveillance aircraft. NATO has 14 such aircraft.

– It monitors the sea areas, there is a lot of sea in Norway and in the NATO countries. This does not fly domestically, but everywhere in the NATO alliance, says Eikeland.
