There will be one of the tournaments in Prague for the canceled US Open qualification

The Czech tennis summer will complement another tournament after the coronavirus break. The current WTA International women’s Open in Sparta and the next four ATP challengers will be joined by the WTA 125K Series, which will be played as compensation for the canceled qualification for the US Open.

WTA officials have announced that two tournaments of this type will take place from 31 August. One will be in Prague in Stromovka and the other in Portschach, Austria. The rewards will be paid by the USTA, the organizer of the US Open grand slam.

Due to the coronavirus, only the main singles competition is planned in New York this year. Qualifications for lower-level tennis players have been canceled and only 32 pairs will play in doubles instead of the original 64.

“I will not hide the enthusiasm that an event will be held in our club, which is directly connected with one of the legendary grand slams – the US Open,” said David Trunda, director of Sparta Prague tennis, in a press release about the tournament, which should competes with 64 players and is endowed with $ 125,000.

“For the Czech Republic, it is a great honor and another great tennis joy. I perceive the allocation of this tournament as an act of great trust and at the same time an appreciation of the work we have shown in recent weeks at events that made us restart the tennis season as one of the first in the world. , “said ČTS President Ivo Kaderka.

The 125K tournament category was established by the WTA in 2012 as an intermediate stage for players coming from ITF tournaments trying to advance on the circuit. Kristýna Plíšková won one of the Czech tennis players four years ago in Ta-lien, China.

The Prague Open takes place in Sparta without spectators this week and the main star is the second player of the world Simona Halepová from Romania. The men’s challengers will start in Štvanice in a week, after which they will play in Prague on Spojy. The winner of three grand slams, Swiss Stan Wawrinka, should also appear at both events. Other challengers will be in Ostrava and Prostějov.
