There will be no vote buying in the Senate, we are seeking consensus: Adán López

Mexico City. Morena’s virtual coordinator in the Senate, Adán Augusto López Hernández, rejected that they already have the three legislators that his group and allies are missing to achieve a qualified majority in that chamber and indicated that he will seek to reach agreements on that matter, to approve the judicial reform, but he has not yet spoken with anyone and there will be no vote buying, nor offering of privileges.

“We act differently, and the track record of those of us who are members of Morena is that of building consensus. That is why sometimes votes have been lost, such as the one on electoral reform in recent years. It was not possible to build it on that occasion. Well, now we are going to try to build a qualified majority.”

He stressed that vote buying is a thing of the past. “Remember the old regime, the PRI and the PAN, remember how the so-called energy reform and the educational reform were approved, we acted differently. We are people of convention and principles.

Interviewed after registering as a Morena senator, he clarified that he has not approached the two PRD senators, Araceli Saucedo and Tabasco native José Sabino Herrera, although he specified that a month ago he met his countryman at a social event, “because we have been friends for a long time.” He even added, “I worked with his father on some political issues when he was Secretary of the Interior, but at no time did I invite him to join Morena.

He also rejected the idea that PAN member Mauricio Vila should move to the party’s bench, but clarified that “it should not be surprising” that the parliamentary groups in the Senate try to build alliances or legislative agreements.”

In all congresses, he said, “we always try to build a majority, we make alliances, we make political agreements and this leads to legislative majorities, simple majorities, qualified majorities where required.”

Regarding the statement by the PVEM coordinator, Manuel Velasco, that it is 99.9 percent likely that they already have those three votes secured, he clarified that this is not the case.

“I do not agree with Manuel’s opinion, I respect it, he is my friend, he is my colleague, we work together, in the construction of an alliance. I believe that we must have respect for each and every one of our colleagues, beyond the parliamentary group to which they belong, but I do tell him that we are professional politicians.”

He insisted that “the parliamentary tradition in practically all countries, if not all democratic countries in the world, is to build a majority. Just remember last year, for example, in the United States Congress, how they tried or how they built a majority to approve the budget, now in Spain recently or what is happening in France where they are trying to build a majority and give political viability to the appointment of a prime minister.”

On the other hand, López Hernández assured that it will be tomorrow, during the meeting of the Morena group, which will be attended by the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, that it will be decided who will preside over the Senate’s board of directors.
