Ten new cities will appear in Poland

Parts of commune councils in Poland returned the status of the city after 150 years of absence from them.

The Prime Minister of Poland handed over to the representatives of the authorities of ten localities a decree granting them city rights. On Thursday, December 30, reports Polish radio.

The journalists clarified that some of the gmina councils that received this status had previously been cities, but were deprived of it 150 years ago. Then they were demoted by order of the king.

The heads of local self-government, present at the ceremonial event in Warsaw, noted that this is “historical justice”. After all, their settlements were cities back in the middle of the 19th century, and they were punished for supporting the January Uprising.

In particular, the mayor of the New Town, Slawomir Zalewski, said that he hoped that the return of city rights would help popularize his gmina.

“Our residents will celebrate the New Year together to celebrate the acquisition of city rights,” he said.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki expressed the opinion that the current decision will affect the development of small settlements.

“This also means the growth of the aspirations and ambitions of the local community. I would like, after what is happening here today before our eyes, also for your public, for your urban and rural communes – so that this means development soon, more fast progress, better infrastructure, “he said.

The following cities also received the status of cities: Cegluv and Jedlnia Letnisko in the Mazovian Voivodeship, Ljutomersk and Bolimów in the Lodz Voivodeship, Pruszcz in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, Ivaniska in the więtokrzyn Voivodeship, Izbica in the Lublin Voivodeship, and Kachora in the Greater Poland Voivodeship.

As a reminder, Poland still retains its decision not pay a fine to the EU for refusal to terminate the use of the Turov mine.
