Chairman of the Riga City Council Mārtiņš Staķis (PP) acknowledged at the hearing that the first days were not easy at the center of the Congress House, as a large number of people approached there at the same time. It has even turned out to be higher than previously estimated.
However, now the center is getting better and better with its tasks and queues shrinking. However, despite the fact that the number of refugees is still potentially growing, a second center is being prepared.
According to the mayor, the experts have acknowledged that these premises in Old Riga are well suited for the specific function, noting as one of the advantages that the premises are divided into offices, allowing the provision of services there.
There is currently no specific date for the opening of the center, as this decision is intended to prepare an additional center, if necessary, explained Staķis.
The decision also envisages authorizing the Executive Director of the City of Riga to conclude with SIA “Riga houses“Management Agreement on the Use of Real Estate on Kaļķu Street and Related Land Units Owned by the Municipality of Riga for the Operation of the Support Center for the Residents of Ukraine from March 14 for the duration of the Russia caused by the war.
The city council also determined that the municipality will grant a 20-way ticket for Riga refugees on public transport in Riga.
Member of Parliament Andris Morozovs (S) had submitted a proposal to grant Ukrainian families with children one-time free tickets for visits to the activities of the Riga National Zoo, SIA “Rīgas meži” and museums owned by the State of Riga.
However, this proposal has not yet been fully assessed from a legal point of view, so it was suggested that it be considered at a later stage. However, he emphasized that the proposal should be considered as soon as possible, calling for another extraordinary meeting to look at the idea.
Stak expressed support for this proposal, while stressing that he wanted any decision to be properly assessed. Therefore, the mayor confirmed that he would be ready to convene an extraordinary meeting when necessary.
