There will be an investigation in the UK into the high cost of coronavirus testing – worldwide

Following criticism from Britain’s Health Minister Jeddah Javid of the high prices of Covid-19 tests for travelers, the country’s competition watchdog has promised an investigation.

The polymerase chain reaction tests required by the UK government for cross-border travelers each cost an average of £ 75 (€ 88), but prices set by private companies can also be much higher. The government’s website contains offers from companies for as much as 2,500 pounds (2,947 euros).

Mr Javid said he had asked the Competition and Markets Authority to take action against unfair market practices by those offering tests.

“People should be able to go on holiday, be it a visit from family members or just a leisure trip, without fear of being overcharged for polymerase chain reaction tests,” said David on Twitter.

The Competition Supervisor has promised to conduct an investigation and make recommendations to the Minister of Health on how to ensure that travelers can use the tests at affordable prices.
