There were 14 people on board, most of them from Egypt. A cargo ship sank off the coast of Greece

The Greek Coast Guard announced on Sunday that a cargo ship flying the Comoros flag with 14 people on board sank off the coast of the island of Lesbos with strong winds blowing in the area.

Coast Guard ships, helicopters and an army frigate are participating in the rescue operation.

The government news agency in Greece said that the ship’s crew consisted of eight Egyptians, four Indians and Syrians, while none of their countries had issued a statement about this yet.

She explained that it was loaded with a shipment of salt.

It quoted the Coast Guard as saying that the ship sank 4.5 nautical miles southwest of Lesbos.

“All but one of its 14 crew members are still missing,” the Greek Coast Guard confirmed.

He added that the ship (Raptor), flying the Comoros flag, sailed from the port of Dekheila in Egypt on its way to Istanbul when it reported a mechanical failure and issued a distress call early Sunday morning.

The Coast Guard rescued one individual, who was transported by helicopter amid strong winds, according to Reuters.
