The Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, acknowledged that “there was no speed or finesse” on the first day of vaccination of older adults in Mexico City, after they registered delays and long lines in the three mayors where the first doses were applied in the capital of the country.
The official assured that an analysis of what happened is being done and that the necessary changes will be made to speed up the process; Furthermore, it revealed that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has already been informed of this situation.
López-Gatell indicated that some of the changes that are intended to be made is to schedule appointments at specific times for people, and place lines in the vaccination units by age ranges, in order to give priority to the oldest, or for those who present any disability.
At an evening press conference at the National Palace, the specialist doctor said that he met with President López Obrador on Monday to evaluate the conditions that deprived adults aged 60 years and over throughout the country on the first day of vaccination, and in particular in the Magdalena Contreras, Cuajimalpa and Milpa Alta municipalities of Mexico City, where in some vaccination units there were delays in the application, long lines and lack of organization.
“Regarding the situation today, it is necessary to recognize, self-critically, that it was not with the speed and finesse with which the opening of vaccination was required,” he admitted.
In tune with the head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell said that the delay was due to the fact that medical personnel arrived late to the distribution centers where they had to collect the refrigerated boxes with the vaccines against Covi-19.

“There were multiple factors that we are analyzing what happened. We were with the President and with the entire cabinet that is participating in Covid, and that was one of the reflections. Let’s see how we can make the arrival of vaccines and personnel much better coordinated. Today in particular, one of the elements that contributed to the delay was the late arrival of vaccinating personnel. The other roadrunners arrived, the armed forces, the nation’s servants, the personnel of the social programs, but the determining factor to be able to start vaccinating in the premises was the late arrival of the vaccinating personnel, who come from the national health institutions. or local health institutions, “he said.
Finally, the Undersecretary asked older adults to go to the vaccination units properly “asleep, well eaten, well hydrated,” as he said they must wait approximately two hours.
