“There was a roar when the name was announced”

On Monday evening, England faced Germany in a Nations League game that meant nothing. It was already clear that England would be relegated to Serie B and that Germany would survive.

But despite being an unexciting match ahead of time, it didn’t take long before England fans set fire to Wembley. In fact, the match hadn’t even started when Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who once again got the chance from the start, got booed.

“When the English team was read, the audience cheered but cheered with boos when the name of Harry Maguire was announced,” writes Sky Sports reporter Peter Smith.

And it is not the first time that the Englishman has had to endure the harsh criticism of the fans.

“He was booed during his last appearance for the national team, in the 3-0 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in March,” writes Smith.

“But regardless of what the crowd thinks, Gareth Southgate is with the defender …” he continues.

This season, Maguire has made two starts and one Premier League appearance.
