Get ready for the 2nd booster Covid-19 vaccine.

GridHEALTH.id – Vaccination Covid-19 booster looks like there will be a second one.

The second booster was motivated by the fact that the effectiveness of the Covid-19 booster vaccine was known to decrease after the fourth month post-injection.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers saw the booster effectiveness of the two vaccines, Pfozer and Moderna, decrease after four months.

Therefore, the CDC assesses the possibility of additional boosters being needed.

The report on the results of this study was issued by the CDC on February 11, 2022.

The CDC analyzed 241,204 emergency department (ED) and urgent care center (UC) patients for COVID, along with 93,408 hospitalizations from August 2021–January 2022 in 10 US states.

Among ED/UC and hospitalized patients, 10% and 12% had received the Covid-19 booster vaccine, respectively.

The CDC researchers also found the vaccine’s effectiveness was 87% for people who had received a booster two months earlier, down to 66% for those who had been boosted four months earlier.

Similarly, vaccine effectiveness also fell for hospitalization, dropping from 91% after two months to 78% after four months.

In this regard, Dr Cassandra Berry, a Professor of Viral Immunology at Murdoch University, notes that most studies measure the level of circulating antibodies in the blood, which are known to naturally decrease and decrease over time.

“A better method of gaining insight into the immunogenicity of vaccines is to measure cellular immunity,” said Professor Berry.

‘Memory B cells and memory T cells can last for decades.’

In addition, it is also known that research shows this type of lasting immunity is potentially better achieved through heterologous vaccination regimes.

“The CDC study only looked at hospitalizations for people given the second and third doses of mRNA and not individuals vaccinated against AstraZeneca or Novavax,” Professor Berry said.

“Therefore, we may consider using a non-mRNA type of vaccine as a booster in Australia for the majority who receive Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.”

In Israel, which started its booster rollout before Australia, a second booster dose has been offered to people with weakened immune systems since the start of the year, while a fourth dose is currently only approved in Australia for those with severely weakened immune systems.

Now ‘the Government [Federal] already allowed a fourth dose for those who are severely immunocompromised,” Professor Esterman told newsGP.

‘So I think the sooner the better. Their government should start approving a fourth dose for the immunocompromised and the elderly, as their immune systems are compromised.”
