In the nineties, all of Flanders lisped like Kamiel Spiessens. Good news for those who want to do it again: the character of Chris Van den Durpel (61) will soon make a comeback.

In retrospect, several things were crazy about the nineties, but Spiessens’ ubiquity deserves a separate mention. The somewhat unsavory, graying gardener with speech impediments not only dominated television. He got with Oesje! – to be catchphrase – his own cinema film in 1997 and with all his singles together, he was in the Ultratop for no less than seventy weeks. You probably remember It’s not hard, it’s easy of Kamiel goes classic, which even culminated in a passage at the Night of the Proms. Good luck getting them out of your head after reading the previous sentence.
Next week, 25 years later, he will announce new plans for 2022 and 2023. “A new chapter in his life”, it sounds in an invitation from Comedy Shows. What that exactly entails will then have to become clear, although a theater performance certainly seems to be one of the options.(bpr)
