MOSCOW, KOMPAS.com – German aid group World hunger Help (WHH) recommends that Russia do not be removed from G20.
The head of the WHH, Mathias Mogge, said removing Russia from the Group of 20 major economies and other international institutions could slow efforts to tackle a worsening global food crisis that has been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.
He thinks it is very important to maintain communication with Russia as one of the world’s largest wheat producers, in overcoming the food crisis.
WHH is an aid group that now serves 14.3 million people with projects in 35 countries around the world.
“Of course, Russia is the aggressor here, and there needs to be sanctions and everything. But, in a humanitarian situation like the one we have today, there must be open lines of communication,” Mogge said in an interview with Reuters this week.
Mogge’s comments came days after US President Joe Biden issued a statement that Russia should be excluded from the G20.
However, Biden’s statement was also doubted by experts. Experts say Russia’s exit is unlikely due to a lack of support from India, China and some other G20 members.
According to the UN Office, Russian invasion to Ukraine since February has pushed food prices up sharply around the world and triggered shortages of staple crops in parts of Central Asia, the Middle East and northern Africa.
The war, which Russia calls a “special military operation” has slashed shipments from the two countries, which together account for 25 percent of world wheat exports and 16 percent of corn exports, pushing prices up sharply on international markets.
