There is still ‘no plan’ to make Rainbow Six Siege a free game

It’s been nearly six years since Rainbow Six Siege launched, and while it continues to attract record player numbers, it still faces stiff opposition from the likes of Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Call of Duty: Warzone – all great free games. Don’t expect Siege to go F2P anytime soon, though, as Ubisoft assured us there’s still “no plan” to do so.

Rainbow Six Siege continues to offer excellent free weekends and the like, but a few people may be hesitant to use Siege because of the initial cost. Game Director Leroy Athanasoff previously stated more than a year ago that regarding Siege’s entry into F2P, “we want it at some point in the development team” and that they “want the game to be accessible to everyone” – although they acknowledged that there are challenges to share.

We spoke to Assistant Game Director Aurélien Chiron about the state of Rainbow Six Siege at the moment and their plans for the future, and of course we had to ask for an update if it could be played for free – and it still seems unlikely.

“We continue to look for ways to attract new players and maintain our loyal community, but there is currently no plan to make Rainbow Six Siege a free game,” said Chiron. If that sounds familiar, this is the exact quote a Ubisoft representative gave us after Athanassoff’s comments. That seems to be the company’s line at the moment, so until Ubisoft decides it’s worth taking Siege in that direction, the game isn’t going to follow that model anytime soon.

Elsewhere in the interview, Chiron emphasized that the studio wasn’t looking to update training fields and situations, but would instead invest in better training tools “so players can test players, weapons, gadgets and learn cards faster.” Furthermore, game director Aurélie Débant says they are “working on issues” related to the game’s mechanics leaning forward and bent, especially “walking very softly”.
