Thus, the EU, including Latvia, will continue to change its time twice a year. In Latvia, the transition to summer time will take place on March 28 this year at 3 or at night from Saturday to Sunday, turning the clock one hour forward.

“As a common vision at EU level on new conditions for changing the time twice a year has not yet been reached, the previously approved procedure is still in force – summer time is valid in Latvia from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. until 31 October 2021, “explained the ministry.

Summer time was first introduced in Latvia in 1981. Since 1997, summer time is valid from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

In 2018, the issue of the need to review the current clock readjustment procedure was raised in Europe. That’s why European commision (EC) conducted a survey of citizens in EU Member States, in which a majority of the population expressed the view that the existing arrangements should be abolished.

Consequently, on 12 September 2018, the EC presented a draft new directive to the EU Member States, calling for an end to the seasonal change of clock time throughout the EU.

The Latvian government has also previously decided that Latvia generally supports the abandonment of seasonal change, and is ready to switch to summer time (GMT + 3) and remain in it permanently after the adoption of the new directive.

Discussions so far have shown that 2021 would be the most appropriate time to abolish seasonal change, but discussions are still ongoing at EU level and there are currently no indications as to when possible changes should be approved.
