“The flu has been in the country for some time, but only now have all the conditions been met to speak of an influenza epidemic”, reported the Sciensano health institute. “We see a clear increase in the number of influenza cases among general practitioners, in laboratory tests and in hospital admissions.”
According to Sciensano, the number of cases is still rising, because we are only at the beginning of the epidemic. The peak is expected in three to four weeks. “Infections occur in all age groups, but so far children and young adults appear to be most affected.”
In addition to the influenza virus, the coronavirus and RSV are still circulating to a lesser extent. For all those viruses, the well-known precautions to protect yourself and others (weaker ones) apply: good ventilation, wash your hands and stay at home in case of illness. Sciensano points out that it is still useful and possible to get the flu vaccine. He also explicitly recommends wearing a mouth mask again on public transport.
