The search for people missing in the ice cave that collapsed in Iceland on Sunday ended because no one is looking for it anymore. All members of the tourist group who were in or near the cave when it collapsed were counted. As a result, the final number of victims has remained the same: one man died on the spot and a woman was taken to a hospital in the capital Reykjavik. Both victims are US citizens, police said.
The rescue operation began around 3pm local time on Sunday when an ice cave collapsed at the Breidamerkurjokull glacier in southeast Iceland. 200 rescuers searched by hand through the frozen rubble to find two people believed to be missing. But Icelandic police have now confirmed that no more people are missing. That decision was reached after the tour operator’s records showed that 23 people attended the ice cave tour, not 25 as believed at first.
Rescuers continued their search yesterday until all the ice that had collapsed had been moved. “It has become clear that there was no one under the ice,” the police said later.
A popular destination
The Icelandic Mountain Guides Association has called for an investigation and stricter regulations for ice cave tours following the disaster. Glacier hikes during the warmer summer months can be very dangerous, the association said. The tourism board is working on a report for the government to discuss regulations.
Tourism Minister Lilja Alfredsdóttir has announced that the matter will be debated in parliament. Ice caves are a popular destination for visitors to Iceland, with tours allowing customers to “explore the inside of glaciers” and their blue color and “patterns amazing” to see in the ice.
