‘There is no money’, the rectors against the medical reform – Ministry of University and Research (MUR)

The cuts suffered by universities of almost 10%, the resources that would not be sufficient for 80 thousand candidates and the protection of healthcare professions that could disappear. These are the aspects that led the rectors to express “deep concern” about the reform of the new access to the faculties of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine presented to the Senate.

Despite this, for the Minister of University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, it is “the moment of yes” because the “no”, in her opinion, risks closing the doors of the university. Gathered at the monthly meeting of the Crui, the rectors nevertheless reiterated their willingness to work on “hypotheses for improving the methods of access to the medical-health professions”. The president of the Conference of Rectors, Giovanna Iannantuoni, during the meeting, then recalled that “universities confirm their commitment to quality training in medical-health disciplines”. And Crui also said it was ready to build “a platform for training in the characterizing subjects covered by the selection methods” to guarantee equal conditions among candidates. But this is not enough to remove the apprehensions of the rectors at the possibility of a free first semester which will eliminate the limited number of students in medicine for six months. Regarding the economic-financial sustainability of the reform, Crui points out that “the cut suffered by university budgets in the current year was close to 10%”.

“A situation which goes from worrying – they observe – to becoming dramatic when we consider the absolute uncertainty about state funding also for the year 2025: in this context the entry of 40/60 thousand more candidates is simply unthinkable”. The second point of concern is, therefore, the reception and adequate training of future aspiring doctors: “the resources used so far for 20 thousand students cannot be sufficient for the 60/80 thousand candidates”. As regards the protection of health professions, for Crui there is a risk that the reform of access to medicine could lead to “a further decrease in candidates” in other health fields, such as nursing. The owner of Mur who spoke to TgCom24 on the new method of entry into medicine speaks instead of “a path to be shared”. For Bernini there is a need for the reform to be “supported above all by the good will of everyone”. This, therefore, “is the time to say ‘yes’ to growth, ‘yes’ to innovations, ‘yes’ to system reforms”. On the contrary, he argues, “anyone who says ‘no’ in a non-collaborative way does so at the risk of closing the doors of an institution, the university, which was created to include and not to exclude”.
