Mexico City. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that regarding the transfer and capture of drug traffickers Ismael The May Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López “have not received cooperation from the United States government” because the information they have provided to Mexico is insufficient, “very basic, very general.”
However, when asked specifically if he was considering presenting a diplomatic note on this incident, he was cautious: “We will wait.” His criticism of the scant flow of information on the details included raising questions: “What happened to the pilot? What did they do with the pilot? Who was he? And of course, where did the plane come from? We want to know more about the negotiation. If it was an agreement or how Mr. Zambada’s lawyer came to declare that he had been detained. We need to know all this well.”
López Obrador said in his morning press conference that the information provided to them is not sufficient, because it is known that they had a long-standing agreement with Guzmán López and that when they arrived in El Paso, Zambada was also on the plane.
“We have to see if it was an agreement, if the two people carried this out of their own free will or if some foreign agency was involved. What we are absolutely sure of is that no Mexican government agency, the armed forces, the National Guard was involved. We want to know more about this,” he said.
He said he was confident that the United States would send all the information and that his government would in turn give a public account of what happened. “It is a delicate matter because we do not want confrontation between gangs. I am referring to organized crime gangs. The other gangs play non-stop. We do not want that, in homicides, for example, 70 or 75 percent of homicides occur due to the confrontation of these gangs.”
Mexico will continue to collaborate but under the current rules, not as it was before when the agencies operated under the coordination of the United States embassy in Mexico. So much so that criminals are constantly being arrested and laboratories destroyed. As never before, we do this because illegal acts cannot be allowed and out of solidarity with a friendly government, a neighbor, a sister nation that is suffering from this drug pandemic.
He recalled that some time ago, US legislators from both parties asked him to mediate with the Chinese government to control the flow of chemical precursors for fentanyl. For this reason, he sent a letter to the president of China, Xi Jinping, to request his collaboration out of humanism to prevent the trafficking of these precursors that causes the death of 100 thousand young Americans a year.
