Rediscovering the Heart of Christmas: A Hungarian Institute’s Call for Reflection

As the twinkling lights and festive decorations begin to fill shop windows, a Hungarian institute is urging people to pause and remember the true meaning of Christmas.

The Szent István Institute has launched an online campaign during Advent, reminding everyone that "There is no Christmas without Jesus."

Dr. Zsuzsa Máthé, the institute’s director, observes a growing disconnect between the commercial frenzy surrounding the holidays and the spiritual significance of Christmas.

"From the Christmas image postcard, and from the loud, colorful and often nervous preparations for the holidays, we ‘cut out’ the person of the person being celebrated," she says.

The institute worries that the focus on gift-giving and festive trimmings overshadows the deeper message of hope and redemption symbolized by the birth of Jesus.

“It is as if we feel that his presence is uncomfortable, because it can shed light on our own spiritual blindness," Dr. Máthé continues, reflecting on how the busyness of modern life often pushes aside fundamental questions about faith and purpose.

This campaign, she explains, aims to encourage introspection and a return to the core values of the holiday.

"Without inner spiritual renewal," she states, "we cannot hope for a change in the peaceful life of ourselves and our communities."

The Sant István Institute invites everyone to spread this message and reflect on the true essence of Christmas. The campaign seeks to spark a conversation about the importance of faith and spiritual reflection during the holiday season.

The institute uses powerful imagery to drive its message home, accompanied by the message: There is no Christmas without Jesus.

Will this call to remember the heart of Christmas resonate with people caught up in the whirlwind of holiday preparations? Only time will tell, but the Szent István Institute’s bold message challenges us all to pause and truly consider the meaning of this special time of year.
