There is never a spark between Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet played by well-grown actors? It will be neither tragic nor romantic at Det Norske Teatret.

Liv Bernhoft Osa and Svein Tindberg play the title roles in “Romeo and Juliet”. An exciting age experiment that is not successful, according to our reviewer.

Before going to Verona for seniors, I read up on old reviews. The criticism over the last 10–20 years was consistent: Romeo and Juliet do not speak clearly enough. Young actors may carry both tragedy and nastiness in their bodies, but the blank verses do not come through.

In Erik Ulfsby’s production at Det Norske Teatret, it is the opposite. Liv Bernhoft Osa and Svein Tindberg are very good at text. Everything comes out. But it doesn’t help when the show is not romantic – and can hardly be called tragic.
