There is evidence of the use of cluster bombs during the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Kiev, March 11, LETA – UNN. A group of investigative journalists, Bellingcat, has gathered evidence of the use of cluster bombs during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Cluster bombs contain dozens or hundreds of small balls that are spread over a wide area. Cluster bombs are fired with rockets or dropped from the air. They continue to cause damage long after the initial attack, killing and maiming people when previously unexploded individual small bombs explode.
Cluster munitions are considered to be a direct threat to civilians during the conflict.
More than 100 countries have banned their use and have signed the convention. However, Russia did not accede to the agreement and continues to use these weapons, especially in eastern Ukraine and Syria.
In recent weeks, Bellingcat has documented the use of these weapons in schools, hospitals and residential areas in Ukrainian cities such as Kharkiv, Odessa and Kherson. Cluster bombs are often used far from visible military purposes.
Bellingcat monitors the use of these weapons on Ukrainian territory due to concerns about the significant harm that cluster bombs could cause to civilians.
