LG has indicated that there are indeed problems with the VRR of its OLED TVs from 2019 and 2020. The televisions switch without the viewer wanting to use lighting in dark scenes.
The problem is with the variable refresh rate (VRR) modes of the you’re on tvphotos from LG. This has been complained about for some time, but now LG has also indicated for the first time that its televisions are struggling with this. In a statement to Forbes, the company states that situations can indeed occur in which luminance changes occur. According to LG, these are moments in dark scenes in games when the VRR mode is on.
Variabele Refresh Rate
The VRR mode problems are more visible on OLED TVs than on those with an LCD panel. After all, the black on an OLED TV is much deeper black, so that problems with that shade are much more immediately visible. There is a clear difference in brightness when the screen is supposed to be gray. When the VRR option is enabled, that brightness changes. A problem that also plays a role with G-Sync and FreeSync.
For example, it would be very noticeable in a game like Gears 5, in which the black values become much higher. You will then see less shadow in dark areas. Something like this can also be seen in a video that someone made of the game Control:
If LG has a solution to the problem, it cannot say at the moment. We expect this to take a while, because LG would have a solution if it were very easy, so that it could apply it immediately. Second, it indicates that it was not easy to implement the advanced game feature.
You are LG
In the meantime, there are many complaints about VRR. Likewise, the image flickers with OLED TVs from LG from 2019. If you turn off G-Sync, these often clearly visible glitches disappear again. A shame, because LG televisions are used a lot by gamers. So it is better to use the regular television mode when playing a game.
LG has also decided to no longer add AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to its 2018 televisions. That means that LG is breaking a promise, because it had promised this to customers. In fact, it posted another support document online in April stating that the capabilities would release in October. LG would have said in a tweet, which has since been taken offline, that that will no longer be the case for LG televisions from 2018.
