There is a worldwide threat of a shortage of two drugs that are used to treat pulmonary embolism, a heart attack and a stroke. There are no alternatives for the treatment of the latter condition, according to the Healthcare and Youth Inspectorate (IGJ) and the Medicines Evaluation Board (MEB).

The shortages of Actilyse (alteplase) and Metalyse (tenecteplase) are caused by an increase in the number of users of the drugs and production problems at the manufacturer. Until early 2024, fewer of the products are expected to be delivered than usual.

In the Netherlands, about 10,000 patients are treated with the medication every year. Preparing the medicines yourself is very complex, according to the inspectorate – and therefore not possible. However, comparable medicines may be temporarily imported from abroad. That will not completely solve the shortage, however, the Inspectorate believes.

However, hospital pharmacies are allowed to temporarily exchange medicines, because there is more stock in some hospitals than in others. According to the Medicines Act, hospital pharmacists are normally only allowed to supply medicines to patients.
