The truce came just hours after ethnic Armenian officials from Nagorno-Karabakh confirmed that the key city of Shusha (known as Shushi in Armenia), the second largest city in the enclave, had been taken over by Azerbaijani forces.
Pashinyan described the deal as “unspeakably painful for me and our people” and said the ceasefire decision was made following “a thorough analysis of the military situation” which saw Azerbaijani forces approaching. in Stepanakert, the main city of the region. Aliyev, on the other hand, said that it is a “historic” agreement and that Armenia was forced to negotiate due to Azerbaijan’s military successes.
After the announcement of the agreement hundreds of protesters opposed to the truce they stormed the government offices Armenian in the capital Yerevan.
