There is a new president of Orlen. Ireneusz Fąfara defeated a long list of candidates

No more speculation. Ireneusz Fąfara became the president of Orlen. The company announced this decision on Wednesday, April 10.

The company’s supervisory board appointed Mr. Ireneusz Fąfara, as of April 11, 2024, as the president of the management board of Orlen SA for the joint term of office of the management board, which ends on the date of the Ordinary General Meeting approving the company’s financial statements for 2025 – the company reported.

As Prime Minister Tusk previously stated at the press conference after the government meeting, as prime minister he will expect the president of Orlen to: this “will increase the sense of security and availability of fuel in Poland.”

He is also the first vice-president of Orlen

However, nominations to the Orlen management board do not end there. By decision of the Minister of State Assets, Borys Budka Witold Literacki will also become a member of the company’s management. From April 11, he will take up the position of vice president for corporate affairs; he will also serve as first deputy president.

Moreover, the supervisory board decided to end with immediate effect the period of delegating a member of the supervisory board, Mr. Ireneusz Sitarski, to temporarily perform the duties of a member of the company’s management board, Orlen reported.

Who is Ireneusz Fąfara?

In the company’s announcement, we read that Ireneusz Fąfara is an expert who knows the fuel sector and the challenges related to the energy transformation. He was already associated with the Orlen Group – in 2010-2017 he managed, among others, the Lithuanian company Orlen Lietuva.

For many years he held top managerial positions in large public and private companies. In the years 2018-2024, he was a member of the supervisory board of Rockbridge TFI. He resigned from this position on the day of his appointment as the president of Orlen. He also resigned from the supervisory board of the Ukrainian company Ukrnafta, which operates in competition with Orlen.

Before he also sat on supervisory boards m.in.:

  • PKO BP (2009-2010),
  • Lotos (2009-2010),
  • Export Credit Insurance Corporation (2007-2009),
  • Kompania Węglowa (2003-2005),
  • National Health Fund (2005-2008),
  • Energy Market Agency (1997-1998)

He also has experience as president. He held this position at Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (2007-2009). He was also vice-president of the Social Insurance Institution in 1998-2007.

He is a graduate of the University of Economics in Krakow.

Who is Witold Literacki?

Witold Literacki, in turn, is presented by the company as an “expert in the field of finance and taxes” who has been “professionally associated with the fuel and energy industry for many years.”

In 2022-2023, he was the financial director at PERN SA. Previously, in the years 2020-2022, he was employed as financial director at Warszawskie Zakłady Mechaniczne PZL-WZM in Warsaw.

This is his second approach to Orlen. In the years 2008-2020, he was the director of the tax office in the concern. Previously, he held the positions of: tax manager at RWS Stoen SA (2007-2008), senior tax audit manager at Carrefour Polska (1999-2007), and consultant at Arthur Andersen (1997-1999). From 1991 to 1997, he was an inspector in the tax audit department of the Tax Office in Zabrze.

He is a graduate of the University of Silesia, Faculty of Social Sciences, in 1994, and an MBA from the Lublin Business School in cooperation with the University of Central Lancashire in Great Britain in 2006.

PKN Orlen is the largest Polish company, whose importance has become even greater after the merger with PGNiG and Lotos.

Orlen has, among others, refineries in Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. He also manages the petrochemical segment and the hydrocarbon mining segment.

It is developing the segment of renewable energy sources and plans to develop safe nuclear energy – by 2030. intended to launch at least one small SMR nuclear reactor. However, these plans were made by the previous management and there was a lot of controversy around them. It is not known what decision regarding the so-called small atom will be taken over by the company’s new management.
