‘There is a need for Tamil nationalism, not Hinduism…’ DMK MP A Raja said before Ramlala’s consecration

New Delhi: DMK MP A Raja said on Sunday that Tamil Nadu does not need Hindu nationalism but Dravidian nationalism and Tamil nationalism. His comment came on the eve of the consecration ceremony of Ram temple in Ayodhya. Speaking at a meeting in Salem, A. Raja said that religion can never become nationality but language can.

DMK MP A Raja told news agency ANI, “We are separated in the name of caste and you try to unite us in the name of religion… We want to unite in the name of religion as per the law but we “Don’t want to be a Hindu as you say.” And we do not want that Hindu nationalism. We need Dravidian nationalism and Tamil nationalism.” Taking a direct dig at the BJP, he said that it wants a Hindu nation.

He said, “Today they talk about Hindu Rashtra. Earlier there was no nation in the name of religion. Pakistan separated from India because Savarkar said it was a Hindu nation, so Jinnah said they were an Islamic nation and separated (from India).” He said, “Religion can never become nationalism but language can become nationalism.”

Last week, party chief MK Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin had said that the DMK does not agree with the temple being built after demolishing a mosque. According to PTI, the DMK Youth Wing chief, referring to the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992, said, “We have no problem with the temple being built there. “We do not agree with the construction of the temple after demolishing the mosque.”

On Sunday, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the MK Stalin government in Telangana has banned the live telecast of the Ayodhya event. The government said that BJP is trying to divert public attention from DMK’s youth programme.
