VIVA – For scientist believe that month belong to Earth formed when a tiny planet the size of Mars known as Theia, hit Earth to a 45 degree angle about 4.5 billion years ago. As a result, chunks of Theia and Earth collect in Earth’s orbit and eventually form the moon.
Recently, researchers combined the two theories to suggest the possibility of much of Theia’s debris trapped beneath the Earth’s surface. There are two giant masses under the Earth, one under the South Atlantic and one under Africa, which are known as large low-shear-velocity provinces (LLSVPs).
Scientists know that massive masses of this extremely dense material exist, because they can cause interference with Earth’s magnetic shield. The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is of particular concern to scientists because it causes a weak spot in our planet’s magnetic shield that stretches from Chile to Zimbabwe.
