“There is a lack of understanding with the GP” (readers’ questions)

I would like to link to Carla Santini’s letter (Corriere, 7 November). I too, like many I imagine, am forced to do prevention out of my own pocket. When I asked my GP to check my vitamin D and insulin levels I received a firm no as well as a mockery. Is vitamin D really checked every five years after the age of 50? For what reason? Yet we know that osteoporosis is an enemy always around the corner. Isn’t the salary of general practitioners paid (that too) out of our own pockets? I received a laugh in response and the phrase “I decide what tests you have to do”. Is this the famous doctor-patient relationship that we talk about so much? Where do our taxes go? I tell my daughters to go and work abroad, because here you are not protected in any situation. Not even in health.Loretta Brusa
