Former world super middleweight champion, Briton George Groves, will not be surprised if his super heavyweight compatriot, WBC title holder Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) ultimately does not enter the ring against Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs).
Let us remind you that they were supposed to fight for the title of absolute champion on February 17, but due to a cut Tyson received in sparring, the meeting was postponed to May 18.
“I said from the very beginning, the only time I will believe this fight will happen is when I see it with my own eyes,” Groves says. “I don’t think Fury ever imagined a fight with Usik. He claims he’s going to fight 10 more times, but if he loses to Usyk, how will that work? It’s a huge risk for him to fight Usyk. He probably really hopes that Usyk can’t take body punches.”
“I was not surprised when the fight was postponed due to a cut. This gave me the feeling that this fight would never happen. “I thought to myself: I bet Fury would choose Joshua over Usyk because he would consider it an easier fight,” George suggested. “The Saudis or the WBC won’t put pressure on Fury to fight Usyk, so maybe he thinks he’ll fight Ngannou again or fight Joshua. Everyone really wants to see this fight, but I don’t believe that if he pulls out, he’ll have to pay a $10 million fine. “Usyk is probably thinking, ‘I don’t know if this guy is going to fight,’ because there’s still a chance that Fury will pull out.”
