For several decades, scientists have been speculating about the possibility that the Earth hosted an advanced civilization in the distant past, but that it has disappeared from nowhere. According to the latest findings, our planet is 4.5 billion years old. Homo sapiens evolved only 200,000 years ago. What happened in the meantime?
This question was asked by Gavin Schmidt, director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and Adam Frank, an American astrophysicist who studies global warming and human impact on the planet. He claims that only a small part of animals and plants turn into fossils. In addition, common archeology, which searches for the remains of ancient or prehistoric buildings, remains and artifacts, is limited by the Earth’s surface. However, this has changed over the years.
The oldest land surface was found in the Negev desert in Israel. It is 1.8 million years old. Older layers are visible only in the geological cross section. So if we wanted to find evidence of the advanced civilization that existed before us, other research methods would have to be chosen. “We ask what would be left after the civilizations that arose tens or hundreds of millions of years ago,” the scientists write in their study.

Buildings, computers, but also skeletal remains are likely to disintegrate rapidly over time. But, for example, traces of fertilizers can be found in the soil in a hundred million years. The small particles generated in the production of plastics, in turn, can merge with the seabed, as can the residues from the combustion of fossil fuels that settle in the rocks. “Layers from our time will be characterized by a higher concentration of nitrogen, two isotopes of carbon and precious metals. There will even be steroids in them, “says Frank.
