Interior Minister Christophe Castaner tried on Friday to put an end to the controversy born on Thursday following a photo showing Emmanuel Macron posing with a T-shirt against police violence at the Angoulême comics festival.
“There are the photos and there are the words. (…) Words are always more important. The President of the Republic has been extremely clear that he knows that the internal security forces are mobilized every day, night … “said Castaner. The police “are there to protect the French, they are mobilized and they do it. Here, let’s stay on the essential. The essential, it is rather the words of the President of the Republic than the comments linked to a photo”, concluded the Minister of the Interior.
Thursday, in Angoulême, Mr. Macron posed with a T-shirt denouncing police violence, offered by the designer Jul, who represented a Fawn (the award attributed to Angoulême) disheveled. Under the drawing is written: “LBD 2020”, reference to the defense ball launcher (LBD) and to the acronym chosen for the year of the comic strip (BD 2020).
Three of the major police unions protested the photo on Thursday.
