European farmers and the BFS demand an urgent review of the already prepared trade deal between the EU and Mercosur
A number of dangerous hormones such as estradiol 17β, banned in the EU for over 40 years due to the risk of cancer but widely used in Latin America, have been found in beef imported from Brazil. This was established after a recent inspection by the DG “Health and Food Safety”, reports the Bulgarian Farmers’ Union (BFS).
In their latest joint press release, European agricultural organizations, including COPA – COGECA, call for an urgent need to revise the agreement between the EU and Mercosur. The opinion is also supported by the Bulgarian Farmers’ Union, which is a member of COPA – COGECA.
Also, corn and sugarcane imported from Brazil are treated with numerous pesticides, such as atrazine, which has been banned from use in the European Union for more than 15 years.
Different safety and environmental standards make this trade agreement unsustainable for EU producers and uncompetitive for farmers, as well as posing a risk to consumers, commented the BFS.
