Position of UMHAT “St. George” for a deceased patient:
In response to numerous media inquiries, we inform you that an investigation has been appointed at the medical institution in connection with the death.
UMHAT “St. George” has already provided the complete medical documentation to the District Prosecutor’s Office – Plovdiv and information on all other issues raised by the investigating authorities.
The new information obtained during the inspection is that there is evidence that the patient was injured in a traffic accident and did not initially seek medical help. Much later, after the trauma and after the appearance of more severe symptoms of craniocerebral trauma, qualified help was sought and the boy was transported by CSMP to the Emergency Department of the hospital.
Appropriate diagnostic tests have been ordered and performed and the patient has been admitted for treatment of the craniocerebral trauma. The type and scope of therapy were discussed with the entire staff of the clinic. The therapy was aimed at controlling the condition and symptoms – a treatment aimed at reducing cerebral edema.
A forensic medical examination was ordered to clarify the causes of death, but the medical institution was not aware of the results, as the materials from the pre-trial proceedings were disclosed only at the discretion of the prosecutor.
An examination was ordered at the medical establishment, which established that the patient had been observed, including on the day of his death, and was conscious and fully in contact, after which his deterioration occurred suddenly.
We strongly disagree with the statements of the relatives of the deceased, describing the behavior of the medical staff at the Clinic of Neurosurgery. We would not like to comment in detail on these statements and at this stage we will show understanding for the condition of the parents.
Despite the false accusations and the media pressure, the medical institution will refrain from giving more details about the trauma, the chronology of events, the treatment and the condition of the young man.
Pre-trial proceedings have been instituted with the aim of clarifying the whole factual situation and assessing whether there is evidence of a medical error and a crime. We have fully cooperated with the pre-trial authorities and will continue to do so.
