The Belarusian authorities are using migration to exert pressure on the European Union, Lithuania said.
The number of migrants who tried to illegally enter Lithuania from Belarus exceeded one thousand. About it informs EU website on Tuesday 6 July.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda is convinced that the Lithuanian government must act immediately to strengthen the EU’s external border.
“We will discuss the situation of the unprecedented migration crisis that Lithuania is facing. The Belarusian regime is using migration to exert pressure on Lithuania and the European Union. We are convinced that European institutions will provide all the necessary assistance to protect external borders,” Nauseda said.
He stressed that the problem is getting worse.
“Earlier we talked about 600 illegal migrants, but within a few days the situation worsened, now the number of illegal border crossings has exceeded a thousand …”, the president added.
Nauseda reminded that the EU does not recognize the legitimacy of the Belarusian regime. According to him, there is a direct connection between the sanctions against Belarus, which were imposed by the EU, and the actions that the Lukashenka regime is now carrying out at the borders.
“Migrants who cross the border are an instrument of political manipulation that is used against Lithuania and the European Union,” the politician summed up.
Recall that in Lithuania they are discussing construction of a fence on the border with Belarus… Different options are being considered: single fence, double, barbed wire or alarm. At the same time, it will not be possible to install a fence along the entire border due to the natural relief. At the moment, the fence has been installed at 78 km of the border, the length of which is 678.8 km.
It was also reported that on July 2, on the border with Belarus, officers of the Lithuanian Border Guard Service detained 116 more illegal migrants. The Lithuanian military had to use weapons and tear gas. In just two days, 179 illegal immigrants were detained.
