Since the beginning of the corona crisis: There are a third fewer taxis in Zurich

The corona crisis is also leaving its mark on the taxi companies in the city of Zurich. Despite the easing, taxis only generate half as much revenue as they did before the crisis.

1500 taxis drove their guests through Zurich before the corona crisis. A year and a half later there are only 1000 – a third less than in 2019, as the SRF regional journal reports. Despite the recent relaxation of the measures against the coronavirus, taxis only generate half as much revenue as they did before the crisis.

Far fewer tourists and, in particular, fewer business people are transported because they often still work from home, according to the Zurich Taxi Association. In the meantime, sales are increasing somewhat during night operations due to the opening of the bars and clubs, but in turn the public transport companies have started up operations again at off-peak times. In addition, the night surcharge of 5 francs in public transport has also been canceled.

The Zurich Taxi Association expects the situation for drivers to continue to deteriorate. If the aid funds, which many taxi companies can currently receive, run out, the association expects a wave of bankruptcies.
