Therapeutic patient education, comparison of practices in France, Europe and Canada – DUMAS

Abstract : Educating a patient about his treatment and pathology has become a necessity with the onset of chronic diseases as the patient has to live with it for the rest of his life. A patient who understands the challenges of his treatment and his disease will be more sensitive to the importance of medical and drug monitoring and more able to recognize the signs of a crisis or the onset of a problem. In France the patient’s experiences, knowledge and vision of his disease are taken into account in order to adapt the care. This vision of patient care may differ in others European countries and throughout the world. After having define the therapeutic patient education in France with the example of myocardial infarction, we will briefly describe the place of therapeutic education in some European countries and in Canada.

Résumé : Educating a patient about his treatment and his pathology has become a necessity with the appearance of chronic pathologies insofar as the patient has to live with it daily and for the rest of his life. A patient who understands the challenges of his treatment and his disease is a person who will be all the more sensitive to the importance of medical and drug monitoring, but also more able to recognize the signs of a crisis or the occurrence of ‘a problem. In France we tend more and more to place the patient within the care. His experience, his knowledge and his vision of his disease are taken into account in order to best adapt the care. This vision of patient care may vary, differ with our European neighbors and in the world. After having spoken of the therapeutic education of the patient in France with the example of the myocardial infarction, we will briefly see the place that it holds in certain European countries and in Canada.
