A few brides have had to overcome as many obstacles to reach the altar as Theodora, the youngest daughter of the late King Constantine and Anne-Marie of Greece, who turned 41 in June. Three date changes (2019, 2022, and 2023), and also a change of venue. Because the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens where she said “I do” to American lawyer of Indian descent Matthew Kumar, whom she got engaged to in 2018, was not her first choice. It had been the island of Spetses, where her brother Nicholas married Tatiana, from whom he has just separated after more than a decade of union.
The choice of this cathedral, richly decorated this Saturday -the same one where she bid farewell to her father a year and a half ago- was not accidental. It was a kind of tribute to her parents, who sealed their love there 60 years ago in September. In the absence of King Constantine, it was her brother Paul, now head of the Greek royal house, who led her to the altar; acting as bridesmaids were her nieces Arrieta –daughter of Alexia and Carlos Morales– and Olympia –daughter of Paul and Marie-Chantal–. But the choice of the temple was not the only nod from a princess who continues to try to build a future in the world of acting, in which so far she has only managed secondary roles.
On her big day, with a leading role, she chose a dress designed by Greek Celia Kritharioti, inspired by that of her mother, Queen Anne-Marie. But more enriched. And following tradition, she used the same tiara and historic veil that belonged to Margaret of Connaught and which were worn by Queen Ingrid of Denmark, her mother and aunts and lastly until now, her sister Alexia. Pieces reserved only for women in the family, although in the case of the Irish lace veil, an exception was made for today’s Queen Mary of Denmark at her wedding to Frederick in 2004.

The city of Athens, which goes all out with each presence of the royal family in Greece despite having left their land and throne more than half a century ago, pulled out all the stops for what was the last wedding of a Greek princess. Hundreds of onlookers came to cheer and observe the extensive list of royalty members who supported the newlyweds.
Absent were the kings of Spain and Denmark
From the Spanish branch stood out Doña Sofia’s presence as one of the most acclaimed. Dressed in red, she showed that elegance is not at odds with age. In fact, she eclipsed Infantas Elena –with an indescribable polka dot dress– and Infanta Cristina –with a blue dress almost identical to that worn by bridesmaids–. With them were Juan Valentín, Miguel, and Irene Urdangarin. It should be noted that Infanta Cristina has always maintained a great relationship with her Greek cousins.
After the religious ceremony officiated in Orthodox rite, guests moved to the luxurious One and Only Aesthesis Hotel in Vouliagmeni. The three days of great Greek wedding celebrations began with a pre-wedding dinner attended by about 250 guests at Athens’ Byzantine and Christian Museum on Friday and will end with a ‘brunch’. Thus bringing a happy ending to a movie-like wedding that had been awaited for over five years.
