The sister, wife and ex-girlfriend of Theo Maassen deny the accusations of misconduct against the comedian. Previously reported Private that Maassen was guilty of domestic violence. Both his wife and ex-girlfriend are said to have been victims.
Private is said to have extensive app contact between Maassen’s wife and mistress. The incidents would also be discussed, the weekly wrote in an extensive article.
The comedian did not respond to the messages. Maassen’s employer, the VPRO, conducted research into signals of inappropriate behavior in the workplace, the broadcaster said in a response. That investigation turned up nothing.
That is why the broadcaster saw no reason not to ask Maassen as a presenter for the program Summer guests. The VPRO emphasizes that the comedian’s private life was not a subject of the investigation.
‘Funny comment used as an incriminating headline’
On Tuesday, Maassen shared a statement from his wife Joyce, his ex-girlfriend Karin and his sister Judith, who also does his management. “We initially did not respond to the article because we do not recognize the magazine as a serious source of information,” they say. “Now that more publications are following and other media are also picking up on this, there is a response to provide definitive clarity.”
Maassen’s ex states that she had a relationship with Maassen “almost thirty years ago”. “It is certainly true that we had heated arguments at the time. But nothing worth mentioning in gossip magazines ever happened,” says Karin.
His sister Judith says that the journalist from Private has used “a funny comment from me in an interview with Paul Haenen” as an incriminating headline in his article. It is shocking.”
‘I do not recognize myself or Theo in these articles’
Joyce, Maassen’s wife, emphatically denies having contributed to the article Private. “The impression is created in the Private that I have contributed to two articles and that I have given permission for publication. That is not the case,” she says. “The journalist acted badly.”
The magazine also wrote that Maassen gave his wife a broken nose. Joyce denies that. She states that she has “never broken anything”. “I do not want to go into details, our privacy has already been violated to a large extent. However, I do think it is important to share with the outside world that I do not recognize either Theo or myself in these articles.”
Evert Santegoeds, editor-in-chief of Private, stated in a response on Tuesday that “we base our decision on app messages that we have received. Our reporter has done a good job. Joyce has known for some time that this publication was coming.” Santegoeds does not want to comment on whether permission has been given to publish certain quotes.
