“Then you’re on your own,” Trump adviser says of Ukrainians
9:55 p.m.: Bryan Lanza, a longtime Republican Party strategist, has made it clear that the new U.S. administration’s top priority in Ukraine is establishing peace, not returning lost territories – including Crimea. Trump’s senior adviser told the BBC that Trump’s administration would ask Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a “realistic vision for peace.”
Lanza continued: “And when President Zelensky comes to the negotiating table and says we can only have peace if we have Crimea, he shows us that he is not serious. Crimea is gone. And if your priority is to get Crimea back and let American soldiers fight to get Crimea back, then you’re on your own.” “Peace and an end to the killing” are the priority, Lanza said.
Army chief praises Ukrainian drone force
9:15 p.m.: The Ukrainian army chief Olexander Syrskyj spoke of successful operations by his drone force in October. At a meeting with the commanders of the drone troops, the results of the operations of the unmanned aerial vehicles against targets at the front and in Russia itself was evaluated. “In October, more than 52,000 enemy targets were destroyed and damaged by drone combat operations,” Syrskyj wrote on Facebook. Among other things, 129 artillery systems of the Russian armed forces and 221 radio systems were destroyed, and around 4,000 Russian soldiers were killed or wounded. Syrskyj’s statements could not be independently verified.
“The technology of unmanned systems is developing rapidly, and we must stay one step ahead of the enemy,” Syrskyj concluded. Some time ago, the Ukrainian military leadership made the development and construction of all types of drones a top priority.
Kyiv wants to prepare meetings between Zelensky and Trump
7:45 p.m.: Ukraine says it has begun preparations for a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President-elect Donald Trump. Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha said this at a joint press conference with EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell in Kiev. However, Sybiha did not give any details – neither about a time frame nor about the location of a possible meeting. “The dialogue between Trump and Zelensky has already been established,” he said, referring to the two politicians’ most recent telephone conversation a few days ago. “We are open to further collaboration.”

3:55 p.m.: The Ukrainian army chief Olexander Syrskyj spoke of successful operations by his drone force in October. At a meeting with the commanders of the drone troops, the results of the operations of the unmanned flying objects against targets at the front and in Russia itself were evaluated. “You will be happy with me”: Trump promise to Zelensky
Saturday, November 9th, 7:10 a.m.: A few hours after his clear election victory, Donald Trump is said to have phoned Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. As the US portal “Axios” reports, Tesla boss and Trump supporter Elon Musk was also part of the conversation. The conversation between the three men is said to have lasted a total of 25 minutes.
“I promise you will be happy with me,” Trump is said to have declared. He didn’t seem to give any details. Nevertheless, he is said to have promised support to Ukraine. As a result, Selenskyj felt “no sense of despair” as a result of the election, it is said.
Elon Musk is also said to have promised further help with Starlink.
During the election campaign, Trump repeatedly emphasized that he wanted to end the war in Ukraine before he took office. According to the Wall Street Journal, one possible scenario from the Trump camp is that Ukraine should promise not to join NATO for at least 20 years. In return, the USA would continue to supply the country with weapons.
A demilitarized zone along the front is therefore part of the plan. The surveillance is exclusively a European task, according to a member of the Trump team.
Dozens injured in Kharkiv after Russian airstrike
Friday, November 8th, 8:00 a.m.: At least 25 people were injured in a nighttime Russian airstrike in a residential area of the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. The entrance to a multi-story residential building was partially destroyed, the region’s military governor, Oleh Synjehubov, wrote on Telegram. Because of the risk of collapse, 30 residents were brought to safety during the night. Surrounding houses and vehicles as well as the entrance to a nearby subway station also suffered damage.
The Russian military has once again attacked the city with heavy guided bombs. There were also impacts in another centrally located district of the city. High-rise buildings, shops, vehicles and another subway station were damaged. However, there were no injuries in the case.
Zelensky accuses Europeans of kowtowing to Putin after the US election
8:06 p.m.: After Donald Trump’s election victory, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accuses European partners of pressuring Ukraine to make concessions to Russia. Without naming names, he warned of the consequences at a summit of the European Political Community (EPG) in Budapest.
That would be suicidal for Europe, he said. One must rely on the concept of “peace through strength”. It is illusory to believe that a just peace can be achieved by making concessions to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
Summit host Viktor Orban and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, among others, had previously made it clear that they saw Republican Trump’s return to the White House as an opportunity to quickly end the war in Ukraine. He had previously claimed several times during the election campaign that he could end the Russian war of aggression within 24 hours.
Orban said after the summit: “The number of those who want peace is growing.” With the election in the USA, this camp has been strengthened again. It’s not about victory or failure, but about a ceasefire. Zelenskyj countered this by saying that they had already tried to reach a ceasefire in 2014. Then Ukraine lost the Crimean Peninsula and was attacked by Russia in 2022. “A ceasefire is preparation for the destruction of our sovereignty, our independence,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky fears for the future of Ukraine after Trump’s victory
Thursday, November 7th, 9:36 a.m.: Following Donald Trump’s victory in this year’s US election, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for continued wartime partnership between the two countries. Ukraine has always greatly appreciated the bipartisan support of the United States, Zelensky said in his evening video message, in which he once again congratulated Trump on moving back into the White House.
If the Republican implements the motto “Peace through Strength” that he used in his first presidency, the whole world will benefit, said Zelensky. He later reported on Platform X about an “excellent” phone call with the Republican.
The United States is Ukraine’s main financial and military supporter. Unlike the outgoing administration of Democrat Joe Biden, Trump promised during his election campaign to end the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine as quickly as possible. Since the Republicans in Congress blocked US military aid to Ukraine for months at his request, there are fears, especially in Kiev, that Trump wants to achieve this peace with massive concessions to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin.
Among other things, Moscow is demanding that Kiev cede four areas currently partially occupied by Russian troops – plus Crimea, which was annexed in 2014.
In the video message, Zelenskyj confirmed his participation in the upcoming European Political Community (EPG) summit in Budapest. After Trump’s election, the Europeans want to discuss stronger cooperation in the security area and also further help for Ukraine. Zelenskyj thanked Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for the invitation and announced “a series of agreements with European heads of state and government”.
