The nominations for the Oscars were announced yesterday. Barbie received a total of eight nominations. Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, among others, have been nominated for the title song ‘What Was I Made For?’. Actress America Ferrera has also been nominated for her role in the film. In addition to his nomination as an actor, Gosling is also a contender for the prize for the best song, with his song ‘I’m Just Ken’.
In a response to the American channel CBS, Gosling said that he felt honored, but also “that I am disappointed that they have not been nominated in their respective categories is putting it mildly.”
According to Gosling, the film’s worldwide success is largely due to Gerwig, who directed the film, and Robbie, who played the lead role. “Against all odds, with nothing more than a few soulless, scantily clad and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, broke our hearts and made history. Their work should be recognized, along with the other nominees who deserve it.”
However, Gosling added that he was “so happy” for actor America Ferrera – who was nominated for best supporting actor – and the other “incredible artists who brought their talents to make this groundbreaking film”.
Gerwig and Robbie have been nominated in other categories, as writer of the script and as co-producer of the film, respectively.
